The Department of Social and Environmental Forestry runs an undergraduate degree program leading to a Bachelor’s degree to be denoted by the letter B. Forestry (or such other abbreviation as may be approved by senate from time to time).

Production of graduates that are adequately equipped with the comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for engaging in sustainable forest management for overall socioeconomic wellbeing and environmental conservation.

Entry Requirements
All candidates for the programme and entering from 100 level must attempt Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination questions in English, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science plus one other science or social science subject such as Economics, Physics, and Geography. In addition to passing the UTME, candidates seeking admission into the Department through UTME entry mode (100 level), must pass at credit level five (5) WASCE/GCE/NECO subjects at one sitting or six (6) subjects at not more than two sittings including English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science plus one other subject science or social science subjects such as Economics, Physics, and Geography.
Candidates entering through the Direct Entry mode (200 level) must satisfy the above minimum ‘O’ level conditions for admission to the degree option and in addition have passed the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level or its equivalent in Chemistry and at least one science or social science subject from Mathematics, Biology, Agriculture, Physics, Economics, and Geography. Such candidates must have obtained the National Diploma (ND) from schools accredited by National Board for Technical Education and in a field relevant to Social and Environmental Forestry and with minimum of upper credit score (60-69); or have obtained the Higher National Diploma (HND) with minimum of upper credit (60-69) in a field relevant to Social and Environmental Forestry.
Candidates that have satisfied the above minimum O’ level conditions for admission to degree option in the department and in addition have obtained the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in a field relevant to Social and Environmental Forestry with a minimum of Credit Grade (60 – 69%) from a Nigerian College of Education recognized by the University, and with relevant subject combinations from among: Agricultural Science, Biology, Botany, zoology and chemistry.
Candidates that have obtained the minimum ‘O’level credit passes as set out above and in addition have obtained the Higher National diploma (HND) with a minimum of upper credit (60-69%) in relevant fields (as listed above) and from Schools or Colleges accredited by the NBTE.Candidates admitted with HND certificate will be exempted from a 12-month practical programme observed at 400 level.
A candidate is accepted on Transfer into the Department only at 200 level if he/she has satisfied the UTME entry requirement into the Department and has not been withdrawn from the University.
POSTGRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMME
The Department of Social and Environmental Forestry offers M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programs in Forest Economics and Governance; Forest Biometrics and Information System as well as Urban and Environmental Forestry. The Department is well poised to develop high level manpower in Forest Economics, Forest Management, Forest Governance and Institutions, Forest Biometrics, Forest Information System, Urban Forestry and Environmental Forestry.
The Department is endowed with experienced and well exposed academic staff who are working assiduously to sustain the high academic standard and discipline the University is known for.
Staffs in the Department have served and are still serving as Resource Persons to organizations and institutions locally and globally. Some of these organizations and institutions include Governments Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Nigeria and across the globe, private sectors, Universities within and outside the country, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), International Timber Trade Organisation (ITTO), African Forest Forum (AFF), African Development Bank (AfDB), World Bank among others. These engagements exemplify the competence and relevance of our staff within and outside the shores of Nigeria.
Justification for the Postgraduate Programs
Since the Department of Social and Environmental Forestry has been created lately from the erstwhile Department of Forest Resources Management, it is very imperative to develop new courses and programmes to keep pace with contemporary development in the field of sustainable forest management. Thus these programs have been developed to place our products at a competitive edge in the labour market and to refocus, reshape and reposition our research activities for local and global relevance.
